Local hospital and church send Haitian aid

  • 2-19-2010

Yakima Regional Medical & Cardiac Center sent medical supplies with a team to Haiti in response to the devastating earthquake, which left hundreds of thousands dead and injured.

Surgeon Jason Cundiff, MD, nurse Lillian Ahrendt and nurse practitioner Linda Damaskos teamed with Memorial Bible Church in Gleed to work with an international faith-based organization called Score International.

The team, headed for Haiti, left January 22 and 24, and flew into the Dominican Republic border town of Jimani, about 35 miles east of Port-au-Prince.  They are working with other physicians and medical professionals from across the US to treat patients with traumatic injuries including shattered bones, infections and other critical medical needs.

Yakima Regional was limited in sending only medical supplies that could be carried by the team, since shipments into Haiti were still restricted.

The hospital sent sterile supplies including: gowns, drapes, gloves, and masks, along with sutures, sponges and iodine.

The hospital also sent surgical instrumentation including clamps and retractors.  The team is expected to return from Haiti in February.
