Gang Free Initiative Consultant has Valley roots

Originally from Grandview, Steve Magallan has spent the last 15 years building a reputation as a nationally-recognized leader in community and organizational development.    

Now, Magallan will use his experience and expertise to build a foundation for the Yakima Gang Free Initiative (“GFI”). Chosen from a field of 7 candidates, Magallan will serve as a consultant to the City and will work under a 1-year, $75,000 contract.  

“We are fortunate to have someone like Steve help get our program established,” said Assistant Mayor and GFI Steering Committee Chair Kathy Coffey.  “His credentials and long track record of success are very impressive.  We’re confident that over the next year Steve will put in place a solid structure that will ensure the long-term success of the GFI,” said Coffey.

City council approved the formation of the GFI, May of this year in order to better coordinate gang prevention, intervention, and suppression programs operated by different entities throughout the community.  The GFI is being developed based on the OJJDP’s Comprehensive Gang Model, a program the Magallan is an expert in.  After Magallan completes his contract, the City plans to hire someone to serve as the GFI coordinator on a more permanent bas
