Results of the holiday Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign announced

YAKIMA COUNTY — The results are in from the recent holiday Drive Hammered, Get Nailed enforcement campaign conducted from November 25, 2010 (Thanksgiving weekend) through January 2, 2011 (New Year’s Weekend).
In Yakima County, a total of 217 motorists were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), and in statewide numbers, law enforcement officers arrested 3,577 drivers for DUI during that time period.
In Yakima County, the Grandview, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Union Gap, Yakima, Selah, Moxee, Yakama Nation, and Wapato Police Departments, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol, participated in the extra emphasis patrols, with the support of the Yakima County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force as well.
The extra patrols were funded by a grant provided by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
During 2009, impaired drivers killed more than half of the 491 people who died on Washington’s roadways.
The 264 impaired driver-involved deaths last year represent a decrease of nine fatalities compared to the previous five-year average.
